Homes Isolated as Streets Flood: Mega Rain Bomb Hits NSW

  • As many as 50,000 individuals might lose access on Thursday.
  • FURTHER READING: Nearly 30 educational institutions along Australia’s eastern seaboard have been shut down.

Numerous residences have been disconnected, and roads have transformed into waterways as well. NSW 'Catastrophic flooding in the Mid North Coast turns lethal as the situation worsens.'

A 63-year-old male whose identity has not been established by law enforcement officials was discovered in his inundated residence on North Moto Road close to Cooperneck around 3 PM on Wednesday.

On Thursday, NSW Police reported that an additional three individuals are unaccounted for.

The heavy rainfall followed by flash floods has led to more than 1,000 emergency service incidents and left numerous households isolated.

An image showing a submerged street close to Settlement Point Road in Port Macquarie has highlighted the severity of the increasing floodwaters — as approximately 50,000 individuals were cautioned that they might face isolation come Thursday.

Extended periods of intense rain will persist through the entire day, with Kempsey and Coffs Harbour being two of the areas under heightened watch for potential flash floods.

Rainfall amounts ranging from 200-300 millimeters are expected within the coming 24 hours, which could result in potential flash floods affecting the coastal regions including North Coast communities such as Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Taree, Woolgoolga, Sawtell, and Dorrigo.

The deluge has spread to the Northern Rivers and Northern Tablelands as a slow-moving trough dumped rain along Australia's east coast.

The NSW SES said it had responded to 1,023 incidents, including 339 flood rescues, in the 24 hours to 5am.

More than 100 rescues in Taree, Glenthorne, Oxley Island and Motowere were outstanding on Thursday morning.

SES Assistant Commissioner Colin Malone said conditions had been challenging.

'We've seen continual rainfall and very fast flowing rivers which, when combined with flooded roads, have made it very difficult to access some isolated people,' he said.

NSW Premier Chris Minns told the Today Show he was saddened by the death of the 63-year-old on the NSW Mid North Coast.

"It’s really heartbreaking, and during such devastating natural calamities, regular families often suffer immensely. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to that man and his loved ones," he said to the show on Thursday.

I am deeply appreciative that we have received support from thousands of volunteers, and the local community has truly come together over the past 48 hours; however, their assistance was essential.

Currently, over 130 alerts have been issued, and locals who might be affected by the floods are being advised to move to elevated areas and leave their homes if possible.
