Braves Forecasted to Part Ways with $38M Cy Young Champ Next Offseason
The Atlanta Braves are entering the season with lofty expectations. They continue to be among the elite teams in the entire National League, side-by-side with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
However, the Braves might appear quite different a year from now.
FanSided's Austin Owens recently made the bold prediction The expectation was that the Braves would part ways with Chris Sale after the conclusion of the 2025 season. Despite having an option for another year in 2026 valued at $18 million, this marks his last guaranteed year under contract.

Sale is heading into the last year of his deal at age 35. After pitching in Major League Baseball for 14 seasons, his body shows significant signs of wear and tear," Owens noted. "Should he excel in 2025 and wish to keep playing, both Anthopoulos and Atlanta’s leadership team might be reluctant to offer him another long-term commitment as a player with over 15 years of experience under his belt. The end of his professional journey could be nearing, giving Sale the chance to leverage 2025 as an ideal time to conclude his career gracefully.
Should Sale put up numbers even remotely similar to those he achieved in 2024, the Atlanta Braves would be ill-advised to turn down his club option and risk losing him to free agency.
Although the Braves boast a wealth of youthful pitching prospects, finding an ace such as Sale is rare. It’s more probable that Atlanta might part ways with someone like Grant Holmes rather thanSale.
Things could be very different if Sale decides to retire. The Braves could also look to cut ties with him if we see major regression from the lefty.
However, all indications this spring suggest that Sale will remain just as formidable as always come 2025. Should the Braves allow him to depart via free agency following yet another stellar season, it would represent a significant error on their part.
