National Gallery of Zimbabwe Set to Showcase 80 Photographic Masterpieces

Starting May 30, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe will host "Portraits of Zimbabwe," an exhibit featuring more than 80 photographic prints by the late photographer Chicago Dzviti. The portraits of Zimbabwe have been brought about through the support of the U.S. Embassy. The exhibit will be jointly curated by Jennifer Kyker, who holds dual positions as an associate professor of ethnomusicology at the Eastman School of Music and as an associate professor of music in the College Music Department at the University of Rochester, along with Fadzai Muchemwa, the curator of contemporary art at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. Dzviti was born in Shamva in 1961, and from this rustic background, he cultivated an interest in photography. He further honed his skills at Harare Polytechnic starting in 1987. Abandoned Goods Yard Set to Transform Into 5,000 New Homes

A previously used freight yard is set to transform into a location for 5,000 new residences following support from the government.

The Fourth Yard in Newcastle is among four government-owned brownfield sites slated for significant redevelopment as part of an initiative aimed at accelerating home construction.

The former goods yard is the largest of the development projects and spans 100 acres (40.5 ha) near the River Tyne.

The North East Mayor, Kim McGuinness, stated that the site had remained idle for two decades and represented a "missed chance."

"It is exactly the kind of site we should be putting houses on," she said.

Next, we will develop job opportunities by constructing residential sites where families can establish long-term roots for their future.

'Untapped resource'

A development framework for Fourth Yard A report published by Newcastle City Council in 2020 indicated that the area encompasses a significant portion of the quayside.

It includes Forth Goods Yard, Pottery Lane East, Pottery Lane West, Quayside West, Newcastle Utilita Arena and Newcastle Heliport.

The properties will be developed by a new Network Rail subsidiary, as announced by the government, with plans to facilitate the creation of approximately 40,000 new residences across the United Kingdom within the upcoming ten years.

Fourth Quarter will be one of the initial projects among several, which include 1,500 residences at Manchester Mayfield and a combined-use project featuring 425 homes in Cambridge.

HM Treasury said a new taskforce was also being established to release surplus public land for housing.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said government-owned sites had been an untapped resource for too long.

"In contrast to the failed approach of the past, we are making the best use of public land to build the homes that families and our Armed Forces need, improving opportunities for homeownership and creating jobs across the country," she said.
