Unravel the Secrets of Tanum's Rock Carvings: Bronze Age Mysteries Revealed

Did you know that Sweden can transport you back millennia? This is particularly true in Tanum, which boasts one of the biggest sets of prehistoric rock carvings in all of Northern Europe.

Situated approximately 90 minutes north of Göteborg, this intriguing location was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. It provides an exclusive look into Scandinavian artwork from the Bronze Age (circa 1500–500 BC). These remarkable inscriptions were carefully etched onto the granite surface and illustrate various aspects of daily life including hunting, agriculture, spiritual ceremonies, and mythical entities.
To begin exploring, start your journey at the Vitlycke Museum, which offers guided tours designed to enhance comprehension of these perplexing historical artifacts. Following that, venture out to discover the four accessible rock-art locations: Vitlycke, Aspeberget, Litsleby, and Fossum; each offering views of these ancient relics within their original settings. In Vitlycke, observe depictions of ships and dynamic human forms. Meanwhile, Aspeberget showcases detailed sculptures of bulls alongside sun symbols. Litsleby features what may be one of Scandinavia’s biggest anthropomorphic representations—a warrior holding a spear possibly symbolizing a deity associated with battle. Lastly, head over to Fossum for intricate panels depicting age-old tales and folklore deeply ingrained in stone surfaces. Absolutely captivating!
